Two summer weekends a year, thousands of Big Apple dapper dames and handsome gents board the Staten Island Ferry from Manhattan to Governors Island to step into a 1920’s lawn party. As the Event Director with Food Karma, an exclusively food & beverage event company, I paired with St. Germain to customize a VIP lounge with crafted cocktails and to curate a General Admission lawn for perfect picnics.

Our menu featured simple sandwiches like ham and Gruyere on a baguette to chilled oysters and shrimp cocktail. An East Village restaurant, Jimmy’s 43, is who we turned to for all of the local ingredients. The Jazz Age Lawn party is the largest event on Food Karma’s calendar and boy, was it a gas to produce.

In 2013, Pig Island broke away from their traditional Governor’s Island location in search of a more accessible and accommodating outdoor space for this ‘pig heaven’. After many meetings and site visits, Erie Basin Park (part of IKEA property) in Red Hook was our new home. I designed the event layout so sponsors like Seamless and The Village Voice would greet guests with giveaways as soon as they walked through the gate. Lining chefs on concrete paths along the water allowed hungry attendees to feel as if they were window-shopping for their next piece of pork instead of standing in line.

The large grassy lawn was the focus of our dining area as guests were encouraged online to bring their own blankets and umbrellas for a more relaxed picnic experience. Live music was in the center of the lawn and placed next to beer sponsors like Sixpoint Ales and so no one had to step far for entertainment.
